February 21, 2017 - Picnic Time

The annual Roots Picnic turns 10 this spring, and organizers are bringing Pharrell, Solange, and Lil Wayne to Festival Pier on Jun 3 to celebrate. Tickets went on sale during noon Monday during rootspicnic.com.

For a decade, a annual cruise has driven internal and inhabitant crowds to Philly to hear a best and brightest, old- and new-school hip-hop artists, some of whom (Snoop Dogg, Public Enemy, Usher in a past) get a singular event to group with one of America’s finest, many energetic live bands: The Roots.

“This really speaks to a staying energy of The Roots and a aberration of a cruise as a good festival,” says Roots cofounder Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter. “Not many song festivals last, have a 10-year run, or reason such effect and stay consistently good and removing better.”

Pharrell Williams (Hidden Figures) will join The Roots, along with additional headliners such as nu-soul songstress Solange (Beyoncé’s sister), producer/bassist Thundercat, old-school swat fable Pete Rock, and British poison jazz DJ Gilles Petersen.

Two of the Roots Picnic events engage Black Thought alone. First, there is his annual, morning-of-the-concert Black Thought/Roots Rock 5K gift run for his GrassROOTS Community Foundation

Then there is a Black Thought J Period Live Mixtape showcase – an improvisational DJ/MC set grown in 2016 during The Roots’ initial New York City picnic. “It was a large strike in New York,” says Trotter, “and now each time we do a picnic, only like my 5K, this live mixtape will be partial of a proceedings.”

The 2017 iteration of a Philly Roots Picnic only happens to be something special: a set to underline rappers Fat Joe and Mobb Deep, along with keyboardist-turned-mega-producer Scott Storch. “This is a official, strange Roots reunion with Philly’s possess Scott Storch,” says Trotter.

Storch famously got his start as a one-time member of The Roots in their early years (he played and cowrote marks on The Roots’ eccentric tag debut, 1993’s Organix), who left a rope by 1995 for fame, fortune, and a news pages. One of Storch’s initial large tracks, “Lean Back,” a 2004 pound with Fat Joe and Remy Ma, will get a live airing as partial of Thought’s Live Mixtape, along with “many other warn marks and additional unannounced guests,” says Trotter. “That’s what creates a Roots Picnic good – a performances we have designed and a ones that only happen.”
